Naalya Secondary Schools' Fantastic Five: Meet the U18 Basketball Stars Training for Continental Glory

The squeak of sneakers on polished concrete echoes through Nakasero Primary School's basketball court each day, but this is no ordinary school practice session.

Five exceptional students from Naalya Secondary School have been selected to join Uganda's U18 Girls' National Basketball Team, currently in intensive training at Nakasero Primary School as they prepare for the upcoming Africa Basketball Championship.

The continental showdown will make history when it tips off at Hoima Stadium later this year marking the first time Uganda has hosted this prestigious tournament.

The Fab Five
The Point Guard (17, Captain) – A lightning-fast floor general with court vision that leaves coaches speechless. Now in her fourth year of competitive basketball, she leads by example during the grueling 6 AM training sessions.

The Sharpshooter (16) – Her three-point accuracy during last month's trials caught national selectors' attention, earning her the highest score in shooting drills among all trialists.

The Power Forward (17) – Standing at 5'11", she dominates the paint. Her rebounding stats at the school-level championship were unmatched across the Central Region.

The Defensive Specialist (15) – The youngest of the five, but arguably the quickest. Her defensive pressure has forced veteran players into turnovers during scrimmage matches.

The Versatile Forward (16) – Capable of playing any position on the court. Coaches praise her basketball IQ and leadership during timeouts.

Training Ground with a Difference

While Nakasero Primary School might seem an unusual choice for national team training, the facility offers a central location and manageable crowd sizes that allow focused preparation.

"The primary school courts have become our sanctuary," says head coach Sarah Nabikolo. "These girls are putting in six hours daily conditioning, tactical drills, and scrimmages. The facilities may be modest, but the heart is not."

Eyes on Hoima
When the Africa Basketball Championship tips off at Hoima Stadium, expectations will be high. The newly renovated facility boasts a 5,000-seat capacity and international-standard flooring a far cry from the primary school courts where this journey began.

"We're not just playing for ourselves," says the team captain. "Hoima is home. We want every Ugandan to feel proud when they watch us compete against the best in Africa."

The tournament will feature powerhouses including reigning champions Egypt, Nigeria, Angola, and Mali. Uganda has never medaled at the U18 level a statistic these five are determined to rewrite.

Balancing Books and Basketball
Back at Naalya Secondary, the school has rallied behind its student-athletes. The administration has arranged flexible deadlines and tutoring sessions to ensure academic progress continues during the intensive training camp.

"These girls are ambassadors," says Naalya's sports Master. "They've shown that with discipline, a student from any school can represent their nation. We couldn't be prouder.”

The Road Ahead

With six weeks remaining until the championship, the training intensity will only increase. The national team will move to Hoima for final preparations three weeks before tip-off, allowing players to acclimate to the stadium environment.

For the five girls from Naalya, the journey from their school court to the national stage represents a dream years in the making.

"When I first picked up a basketball in Primary Six, I never imagined this," one of the players reflects. "Now I'm two months away from playing in front of my entire country. Basketball has given me wings."
